Hindi is the most widely spoken language of the Republic of India, centered principally in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh in the north-central part of the country. Its 275 million speakers rank it as one of the leading languages of the world but it is, nevertheless, understood by only about one-third of India's population. When independence was achieved in 1947, Hindi was chosen as India's national language, but its failure to win acceptance among speakers of other languages has forced it to share the title of official language with English. Hindi is spoken/used in the following countries: Fiji (Republic of), Guyana, India, Mauritius, Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago, United States of America. Language Family Family: Indo-European Gobar said nothing more. He put his staff on his shoulder and walked away. Hon looked with pride at the receding figure of his son. He was growing into a fine young man. Time he married. But Hon had no money for the marriage. With the division in the family they had fallen on evil days. People did come to see Gobar and approved of him. But when they saw the family down and out, they washed their hands of the idea. Those who agreed pitched the demand for bride money so high that Hon was helpless. He had to marry off Sona too. It was bad enough if a son did not marry, but for a grown-up girl to remain unmarried was sacrilege. How could he look his friends in the face with an unmarried girl in the house? |
