The Poema de Mio Cid recounts the adventures of Rodrigo Diaz, an eleventh-century hero of Islamic Spain. One of the few Christian figures of the Spanish Reconquest to be known by a Muslim title (from the Spanish Arabic al-sid, or “lord”), the Cid and his legendary exploits were already the subjects of ballads, songs, and children's tales by the time of this twelfth-century epic poem.
