Yoeme (Yaqui) is spoken in northwestern Mexico, in the state of Sonora, and in the United States in southern Arizona.
Yoeme is a Uto-Aztecan language closely related to Mayo, with about 15,000 or more speakers. The Yaqui resisted Spanish and Mexican control for centuries. The Pascua Yaqui Tribe in Arizona was federally recognized in 1978.
