Balti is spoken in northern Pakistan, in Baltistan (Gilgit-Baltistan, around Skardu), and in the Kargil district of Ladakh in India.
Balti is a Tibetic language with about 400,000 speakers. Unlike most Tibetic peoples, the Balti are Muslim, and the language is written mainly in the Perso-Arabic script.
