Aku

Language Information

The Aku language (also known as Aku Talk or Gambian Krio) is primarily spoken in The Gambia, with close cultural and linguistic ties to Sierra Leone.
Creole language family, specifically classified as an English-based creole. It is part of the West African Pidgin English complex. Its vocabulary is predominantly drawn from English (its superstrate language), but its grammar, syntax, and parts of its vocabulary are heavily influenced by West African languages (its substrate), most notably Yoruba.
The origins of the language and its speakers date back to the late 18th and 19th centuries following the abolition of the slave trade by the British in 1807. The background of the Aku people is deeply tied to the transatlantic slave trade resettlement.
