Altaic
Language Information
The term Altaic describes a long-hypothesized, though widely discredited, language family of Eurasia that groups together the Turkic, Mongolic, and Tungusic language families, and sometimes Korean and Japonic.
Languages under this proposed grouping are spoken across a vast geographic arc stretching from Eastern Europe and Turkey, through the Middle East and Central Asia, to Siberia, China, the Korean Peninsula, and the Japanese archipelago:Turkey and Southeastern Europe: Home to the highest density of Turkic speakers (including Turkish and regional dialects).Central Asia: Spoken in countries including Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Azerbaijan.East Asia and Siberia: Spoken in Mongolia, Russia (Siberia and the Altai region), northern and western parts of China (such as Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia), the Korean Peninsula, and Japan.
Origin of the Term: The concept emerged during the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1845, Finnish linguist Matthias Castrén coined the name "Altaic" after the Altai Mountain range in Central Asia, which roughly sits in the middle of their geographic distribution.
