Language Information

The Andi language is spoken in the Botlikh region (Botlikhsky district) of the republic of Dagestan, within the Russian Federation.
Around 5,800 speakers from the ethnic Andi community (based on 2010 census data). While adults in the community use it as a first language, not all young people speak it, making it a threatened or endangered language.Villages: Spoken primarily in the mountains of northwestern Dagestan, specifically in villages such as Andi (along the Andi-Koisu river), Gunkha (Gunha), Gagatl, Ashali, Rikvani (Rikwani), Chanko (Chakhno), Zilo, Munib, and Kvanxidatl (Kvanhidatl). There are also some enclaves in lowland urban regions of Dagestan.Writing System & Literacy: Andi has no native written or literary form. Speakers generally use Avar or Russian as their literary and written languages. Avar is also frequently used for communication between speakers of different local minority groups.
