Language Information

The Athabaskan (Athapaskan) languages are spoken in three separate regions: the Northern group in the interior of Alaska and northwestern Canada (Yukon, Northwest Territories, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba); the Pacific Coast group in northern California and southern Oregon; and the Southern (Apachean) group in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, Texas, and Oklahoma, as well as northern Mexico.
Athabaskan is one of the largest families of North American Indian languages, with about 40 languages. It is part of the Na-Dene family, together with Eyak and Tlingit. Navajo is by far the largest Athabaskan language, with about 170,000 speakers. The name comes from Lake Athabasca in Canada. Most of the other languages are endangered.
