Aukaans (Aukan, or Ndyuka) is spoken in eastern Suriname and western French Guiana, along the Marowijne and Tapanahony rivers.
Aukaans is an English-based creole spoken by the Ndyuka, descendants of Maroons who escaped from plantations in the 18th century. It has about 25,000 to 60,000 speakers. It has its own syllabary, the Afaka script, created in 1910.
