Language Information

The Mayan languages are spoken in southern Mexico (the Yucatán Peninsula, Chiapas, and Tabasco), Guatemala, and Belize, with smaller numbers in western Honduras, and by immigrant communities in the United States.
Mayan is a family of about 30 related languages, including Yucatec Maya, K'iche', Q'eqchi', Kaqchikel, Mam, Tzotzil, and Tzeltal. Together they have about 6 million speakers, and roughly 40 percent of Guatemala's population speaks a Mayan language. The ancient Maya developed the most complete writing system of pre-Columbian America, a script of word signs and syllable signs carved on monuments and painted in bark-paper books. It was largely deciphered in the second half of the 20th century.
