Language Information
The Caddoan languages were spoken on the Great Plains and in the southern United States, in what are now Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Kansas, Nebraska, and North and South Dakota. Their remaining speakers live mainly in Oklahoma and North Dakota.
Caddoan is a small family of North American Indian languages. It includes Caddo, Wichita, Pawnee, Arikara, and the extinct Kitsai. All the surviving languages are critically endangered: Wichita lost its last fluent native speaker in 2016, and Caddo, Pawnee, and Arikara have very few or no fluent speakers left, though tribal programs are working to revive them.
