Language Information

The Acholi language (also known as Acoli, Leb Acoli, or Leb Lwo) is primarily spoken in two countries: Uganda and South Sudan.
The vast majority of its roughly 1.5 to 2 million speakers live in a region known as Acholiland in Northern Uganda, which spans districts like Gulu, Kitgum, Pader, and Amuru. In South Sudan, it is mainly spoken in Magwi County within the Eastern Equatoria region. Due to past conflicts, diaspora communities also exist in countries like the United States and Australia.
Acholi is a tonal language, meaning the pitch used to pronounce a vowel can completely change a word's meaning. It also utilizes vowel harmony and uses a Latin-based script introduced during the colonial era for its written form.
