Language Information
Zuni is spoken in the United States, in the Pueblo of Zuni in western New Mexico, near the Arizona border.
Zuni is a language isolate, with no proven relationship to any other language, although some scholars have proposed links with the Penutian languages of California. About 9,000 people speak it, which is unusually many for a North American Indian language, and some children still learn it at home. The Zuni have lived in the same region for many centuries, and their traditional religion and ceremonies are still conducted in the language.
