Language Information
Tsimshian (Sm'algyax) is spoken in Canada along the northern coast of British Columbia, around Prince Rupert and the Skeena River, and in the United States in the village of Metlakatla on Annette Island in southeastern Alaska.
Tsimshian belongs to the small Tsimshianic family, which also includes Nisga'a and Gitxsan. The Metlakatla community in Alaska was founded in 1887, when a group of Tsimshian moved there from British Columbia with the missionary William Duncan. The language is critically endangered, with only a few dozen fluent speakers, mostly elders, but it is taught in schools and community programs.
