Language Information
Bobangi is spoken along the Congo and Ubangi rivers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo.
Bobangi is a Bantu language that was the main trade language of the middle Congo River in the 19th century, when Bobangi traders carried ivory and other goods along the river. It was the basis for Lingala, which developed from it around colonial river stations and has since largely replaced it. Today Bobangi has relatively few native speakers.
