Language Information
Chikaranga (Karanga) is spoken in southern and central Zimbabwe, especially in Masvingo and Midlands provinces.
Chikaranga is one of the main dialects of Shona, a Bantu language, and it is part of the basis of standard written Shona. It should not be confused with Kalanga (Ikalanga), a separate but related language spoken in southwestern Zimbabwe and northeastern Botswana. The Karanga are traditionally associated with the builders of Great Zimbabwe, the stone city that flourished from about the 11th to the 15th century.
