Language Information
The Iroquoian languages are spoken in the United States, in New York, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, and North Carolina, and in Canada in Ontario and Quebec.
Iroquoian is a family of North American Indian languages. Its northern branch includes Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, and Tuscarora, the languages of the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy, as well as the extinct Huron (Wyandot). Its southern branch consists of Cherokee, the largest Iroquoian language today, for which Sequoyah created a syllabary in 1821. All the Iroquoian languages are endangered, though Mohawk and Cherokee have active immersion programs.
