Language Information

Kwakwala is spoken in Canada, in British Columbia, on northern Vancouver Island, the neighboring small islands, and the nearby mainland coast, in communities such as Alert Bay and Fort Rupert.
Kwakwala is the language of the Kwakwaka'wakw people, formerly called the Kwakiutl. It belongs to the Northern branch of the Wakashan family. The anthropologist Franz Boas and his Kwakwaka'wakw collaborator George Hunt recorded thousands of pages of Kwakwala texts in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today it is critically endangered, with fewer than 200 fluent speakers, mostly elders, although it is taught in community schools.
