Gwich'in is spoken in the United States in northeastern Alaska, in villages such as Fort Yukon, Arctic Village, and Venetie, and in Canada in the Northwest Territories (around Fort McPherson, Aklavik, and Inuvik) and the northern Yukon (Old Crow).
Gwich'in belongs to the Northern branch of the Athapaskan family and is an official language of the Northwest Territories. The Gwich'in have traditionally depended on the Porcupine caribou herd. The language is endangered, with a few hundred speakers, most of them older adults.
