Language Information

Yao (Mien, or Iu Mien) is spoken in southern China (mainly Guangxi, Hunan, Yunnan, and Guangdong), northern Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. Refugee communities live in the United States (especially California, Oregon, and Washington), France, and Canada.
Yao belongs to the Mienic branch of the Hmong-Mien (Miao-Yao) family, related to Hmong. It is a tonal language. Traditionally the Yao used Chinese characters to write religious texts; today a Roman alphabet devised in 1984 is used in China and the United States. Many Yao in Laos fled to Thailand and then to the United States after the Vietnam War.
