Language Information
Tewa is spoken in the United States, in the Pueblos of northern New Mexico (Ohkay Owingeh, Santa Clara, San Ildefonso, Nambe, Tesuque, and Pojoaque) and in the Hopi-Tewa village of Hano on First Mesa in Arizona.
Tewa belongs to the Kiowa-Tanoan family and is related to Tiwa, Towa, and Kiowa. The Arizona Tewa are descended from people who moved west after the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. The language is endangered, with perhaps a thousand or so speakers, mostly older adults, but several Pueblos have school and community language programs.
