Language Information
Bohairic is the dialect of Coptic that was spoken in the western Nile Delta of northern Egypt, around Alexandria and the monasteries of Wadi el-Natrun. It is no longer spoken, but it is the liturgical language of the Coptic Orthodox Church, used in Egypt and in Coptic churches abroad.
Coptic was the last stage of the ancient Egyptian language, written in an alphabet based on Greek with several letters taken from Egyptian Demotic writing. Bohairic replaced Sahidic as the standard dialect of the Coptic Church in the 11th century. Arabic gradually replaced Coptic as the spoken language of Egypt, and Coptic died out as an everyday language by about the 17th century.
