Cheremis is the older name for Mari, spoken in Russia, mainly in the Mari El Republic on the middle Volga River, and in the neighboring republics of Bashkortostan, Tatarstan, and Udmurtia.
Mari is a Finno-Ugric language of the Uralic family, with two literary standards, Meadow Mari and Hill Mari. It has about 400,000 speakers. It is written in the Cyrillic alphabet and has been strongly influenced by Tatar and Chuvash. The Mari are known for keeping their traditional nature religion, with sacred groves, into modern times.
