Devanagari developed from the ancient Brahmi script and took its standard form by about the 10th century A.D. It is written from left to right, and its letters hang from a horizontal line along the top. Each consonant carries an inherent vowel a, and other vowels are shown by marks attached to the consonant. The name means roughly "script of the city of the gods."
