Dungan is spoken in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, mainly in the Chui Valley, and in parts of Uzbekistan.
Dungan is a form of Mandarin Chinese spoken by descendants of Hui (Chinese Muslim) refugees who fled northwestern China after the failed Dungan Revolt of 1862-1877. It has about 110,000 speakers. Unlike other forms of Chinese, it is written in the Cyrillic alphabet rather than Chinese characters, and it has borrowed many words from Russian, Arabic, Persian, and Turkic languages.
