Language Information
The Futhark is the runic alphabet used by Germanic peoples in northern Europe, especially Scandinavia, Germany, England, and the Frisian coast. It is no longer used except for decorative and ceremonial purposes.
The name comes from its first six letters: f, u, th, a, r, k. The Elder Futhark of 24 runes was used from about the 2nd to the 8th century A.D. It developed into the Younger Futhark of 16 runes in Scandinavia during the Viking Age and into the expanded Anglo-Saxon Futhorc in England. Runes were carved on stone, wood, bone, and metal, and their angular shapes suited carving.
