Language Information
Glagolitic is the oldest known Slavic alphabet. It is no longer in everyday use, but it survived in Croatia, especially along the Dalmatian coast and islands, for use in Catholic liturgical books until the 19th and early 20th centuries. It is also found in early manuscripts from Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Moravia, and Bohemia.
Glagolitic was created in the 860s by the missionary Saint Cyril (Constantine) for the translation of the Bible and liturgy into Old Church Slavonic. Its letter shapes are highly original, though some may be based on Greek cursive or Hebrew letters. In most Slavic lands it was soon replaced by the Cyrillic alphabet.
