Gurage is spoken in Ethiopia, in the Gurage Zone southwest of Addis Ababa, and by large Gurage communities in Addis Ababa and other Ethiopian cities.
Gurage is a group of about a dozen related Semitic languages, including Sebat Bet Gurage (Chaha), Soddo, and Silt'e. Together they have well over a million speakers. They belong to the Ethiopic branch of Semitic, related to Amharic, and are influenced by neighboring Cushitic languages. The Gurage are known throughout Ethiopia as traders and businesspeople.
