Language Information
Hopi is spoken in the United States, in northeastern Arizona, in villages on and around the three mesas of the Hopi Reservation, such as Oraibi, Walpi, and Shungopavi.
Hopi belongs to the Uto-Aztecan family, related to Shoshone, Comanche, and Nahuatl. Old Oraibi, founded around A.D. 1100, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the United States. About 6,000 people speak Hopi, but most are older adults, and the tribe has developed a dictionary and school programs to strengthen the language.
