Lachish

Extinct language

Language Information

The Lachish Letters are a group of inscriptions in ancient Hebrew found in 1935 and 1938 at Tel Lachish, southwest of Jerusalem in modern Israel. The language is extinct in this form.
The letters were written in ink on pieces of pottery (ostraca) in the Paleo-Hebrew alphabet, shortly before the Babylonians destroyed Lachish in 587-586 B.C. They are military messages between officers and give a rare picture of the language and life of Judah at the time of the prophet Jeremiah.
