Lak is spoken in Russia, in the Republic of Dagestan in the North Caucasus, mainly in the mountainous Lak district and in the capital, Makhachkala.
Lak is a Northeast Caucasian (Nakh-Dagestanian) language and one of the official languages of Dagestan. It has about 150,000 speakers. It is written in the Cyrillic alphabet with extra letters, and like other Dagestanian languages it has a large number of consonants and a complex system of grammatical cases.
