Language Information
Sahidic was the dialect of Coptic spoken in Upper (southern) Egypt, and it was the main literary dialect of Coptic. It is no longer spoken, though it is studied in Egypt and around the world.
Most early Coptic literature, including the oldest Coptic translations of the Bible and the Nag Hammadi texts, is written in Sahidic. It was the standard dialect of the Coptic Church until the 11th century, when Bohairic replaced it. Coptic, the last stage of the ancient Egyptian language, was written in an alphabet based on Greek.
