The Slavic languages are spoken across Eastern and Central Europe and in northern Asia: in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Bulgaria.
Slavic is a branch of the Indo-European family with about 315 million speakers. It is divided into East Slavic (Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian), West Slavic (Polish, Czech, Slovak, Sorbian), and South Slavic (Slovenian, Serbo-Croatian, Macedonian, Bulgarian). The languages are written in the Cyrillic or Roman alphabet, generally depending on whether the people are Orthodox or Catholic in tradition.
