Language Information
Coeur d'Alene is spoken in the United States, in northern Idaho, on the Coeur d'Alene Reservation around Plummer.
Coeur d'Alene (Snchitsu'umshtsn) is an Interior Salish language. It is critically endangered, with no or very few first-language speakers left, but the tribe runs language classes. The French name, meaning "heart of an awl," was given by fur traders, perhaps for the people's sharp trading skills.
