Germanic-Saxon (Old Saxon) was spoken from about the 9th to the 12th century A.D. in northwestern Germany (present-day Lower Saxony and Westphalia) and the eastern Netherlands. It is no longer spoken.
Old Saxon is a West Germanic language, the ancestor of modern Low German, and closely related to Old English and Old Frisian. Its best known text is the Heliand, a retelling of the life of Christ in alliterative verse written around A.D. 830.
