Language Information
Gurmukhi is the script used to write Punjabi in India, especially in the state of Punjab, and by Sikh communities around the world, including in the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States.
Gurmukhi (meaning "from the mouth of the Guru") was standardized in the 16th century by Guru Angad, the second Sikh Guru, and it is the script of the Sikh scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib. It developed from earlier Indian scripts descended from Brahmi. In Pakistan, Punjabi is written instead in a Perso-Arabic script called Shahmukhi.
