Language Information
Lakota is spoken in the United States, mainly on reservations in South Dakota (Pine Ridge, Rosebud, Cheyenne River, and Standing Rock) and North Dakota, and in Canada in Saskatchewan.
Lakota is the western dialect of the Sioux language, a Siouan language closely related to Dakota. It is spoken by the Teton Sioux, whose leaders included Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. It has about 2,000 fluent speakers, most of them elderly, making it one of the larger Native languages of the United States; immersion schools and a standard Lakota dictionary are helping revitalize it.
