Thamudic

Extinct language

Language Information

Thamudic is the name given to thousands of ancient inscriptions found across the Arabian Peninsula, especially in northern and western Saudi Arabia, and in Jordan, Syria, and Sinai. The language is extinct.
The inscriptions, dating from about the 6th century B.C. to the 4th century A.D., are written in alphabets related to the South Arabian script. Most are short graffiti on rocks, giving names and prayers. They are written in early North Arabian dialects, ancestors or relatives of Arabic.
