Scottish Gaelic is spoken in the United Kingdom, in the Highlands and Western Isles of Scotland (especially the Outer Hebrides, Skye, and Tiree) and in Glasgow and Edinburgh, and in Canada in Nova Scotia (Cape Breton Island).
Scottish Gaelic is a Goidelic Celtic language, descended from the Irish brought to Scotland around the 5th century A.D. It has about 60,000 speakers, and about 130,000 people have some knowledge of it. The Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act of 2005 gave it official status, and Gaelic-medium schools are growing.
