Language Information
Old Irish is the earliest form of Irish for which there are extensive written records. It was used in Ireland from about A.D. 600 to 900, and it is no longer spoken.
Old Irish is a Goidelic Celtic language, the ancestor of Modern Irish, Scottish Gaelic, and Manx. It is known from glosses written by Irish monks in Latin manuscripts, many preserved in Continental monasteries, and from early law texts, poetry, and sagas such as the Táin Bó Cúailnge. Its grammar is famously complex.
