Moabite was spoken in the ancient kingdom of Moab, east of the Dead Sea in what is now Jordan. It is extinct.
Moabite was a Canaanite language, very close to Hebrew. It is known mainly from the Mesha Stele (Moabite Stone), found in 1868 at Dhiban, Jordan, on which King Mesha describes his victories over Israel around 840 B.C. The stele is now in the Louvre in Paris.
