Moksha is spoken in Russia, mainly in the western part of the Republic of Mordovia on the middle Volga River, and in the neighboring regions of Penza, Ryazan, and Tambov.
Moksha is one of the two Mordvinic languages of the Uralic family, closely related to Erzya. It has a few hundred thousand speakers and is written in the Cyrillic alphabet. Together with Erzya and Russian, it is an official language of Mordovia.
