Lihyanite

Extinct language

Language Information

Lihyanite (Dadanitic) was used in the ancient oasis of Dedan (modern al-Ula) in northwestern Saudi Arabia. It is extinct.
Lihyanite is known from several hundred inscriptions written in an alphabet derived from the South Arabian script, dating from about the 6th to the 2nd century B.C., when the kingdoms of Dedan and Lihyan flourished on the incense trade route. It is an early form of North Arabian, related to Arabic.
