Language Information
Halkomelem is spoken in Canada, in southwestern British Columbia: on southeastern Vancouver Island (around Nanaimo, Duncan, and Chemainus) and along the lower Fraser River from Vancouver to Yale.
Halkomelem is a Coast Salish language with three main dialects: Hul'qumi'num' on Vancouver Island, Hun'qumi'num' on the lower Fraser River, and Halq'eméylem on the upper Fraser River. It is critically endangered, with only a small number of fluent elderly speakers, but all three dialect communities have revitalization programs, and the language is taught in schools and at the university level.
