Language Information
Kannada is spoken primarily in the state of Karnataka in southern India, where it is the official language. It is also spoken in neighboring states (Maharashtra, Goa, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala) and by communities in the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Persian Gulf states.
Kannada is one of the major Dravidian languages, with about 44 million native speakers and roughly 15 million second-language speakers. Its earliest known inscription, at Halmidi, dates to about A.D. 450, and India designated it a classical language in 2008. It is written in the Kannada script, which descends from the ancient Brahmi script and is closely related to the Telugu script.
