Anyimere

Language Information

The Animere language (also spelled Anyimere or Kunda) is spoken exclusively in Ghana, specifically north of the Volta Region in the Oti region within two villages: Kecheibi (in Nkwanta South) and Kunda (in Krachi East).
It is spoken by members of the Benimbere ethnic group, an extremely small community numbering around 500 total ethnic members, though recent field surveys count only a tiny handful of fluent native speakers.Endangerment Status: Animere is a critically endangered language. Recent linguistic documentation projects (such as those by James Essegbey and Felix Ameka) estimated that there are fewer than 20 fluent native speakers left, all of whom are over 50 years old.Language Shift: The language is no longer being transmitted to children. Speakers are multilingual, actively using dominant regional and national languages like Adele, Twi (Akan), Ewe, and English in their daily lives, with Twi rapidly replacing Animere as the primary home and first language for the community.
