Old Prussian

Extinct language

Language Information

Old Prussian was spoken in the southeastern Baltic region, in what is now northern Poland and the Kaliningrad region of Russia. It is extinct.
Old Prussian was a Western Baltic language related to Lithuanian and Latvian. After the conquest of the region by the Teutonic Knights in the 13th century, German gradually replaced it, and it died out around the early 18th century. It is known from a few texts, including 16th-century translations of Luther's catechism. The German state of Prussia took its name from the Old Prussians.
