Language Information
Old Church Slavonic was the first written Slavic language, used in the 9th to 11th centuries in Moravia, Bulgaria, and other Slavic lands. It is no longer spoken.
It was created as a literary language by the missionaries Cyril and Methodius in the 860s, based on the South Slavic dialect of the Thessaloniki region, for translating the Bible and the liturgy. It was written in the Glagolitic and Cyrillic alphabets. It developed into Church Slavic, which is still used as a liturgical language by the Orthodox churches.
