Language Information

Manx is spoken on the Isle of Man, a self-governing British Crown Dependency in the Irish Sea.
Manx is a Goidelic Celtic language, closely related to Irish and Scottish Gaelic. Its last native speaker, Ned Maddrell, died in 1974, but a revival movement has produced a new generation of speakers, including children educated at the Manx-language primary school. About 2,000 people now have some knowledge of it. Manx spelling is based on English rather than Gaelic conventions.
