Gaulish

Extinct language

Language Information

Gaulish was spoken in ancient Gaul, covering modern France, Belgium, western Switzerland, and northern Italy. It is extinct.
Gaulish was a Continental Celtic language, the language of the Gauls who fought Julius Caesar. It is known from several hundred inscriptions, written in Greek, Latin, and Etruscan-derived letters, and from place names such as Paris (from the Parisii tribe). It died out in the 5th or 6th century A.D., replaced by Latin, which later developed into French.
